Back to the old game :-)

As you can see I am, finally, back to the old World Run procedure of 50km
a day! It has been around 4 months since I could do longer stages; so
tired had I become from the mountain of km that had been building up in
the legs.

But the days, weeks and months of patient waiting - and patience with the
body is essential, I feel - has paid off:

59km today felt easy and joyfull, as if the legs was deducted around 10
000km :-)

It will still take some careful judgement to get the remaining 10 days of
55km average done (last 7 days in England are Long stages). But at the
moment I am "hungry" for the challenge :-)

- Tony Mangans daily column will be added soon. For now I can just say
that its is humorous, but long like the Canadian prairie ;-)

{Added 15.October:
Tony Mangan:
"Thursday 13th October. New Inn, Laois County. 59km.

We were off to a nice start this morning. It was a bit cold at first but
then the sun shone through. After Jesper's traditional 3km warm up he
soon settled into his 27m.30 sec 5km segments. As usual he would record
his distance into his back-up log book, take a swig of cola always
stretching during his short breaks. Off he would go again always so
focussed and methodical.
The last six months in the North America Jesper was clocking up lesser
daily distances than before. " I was so fatigued I neeeded to take it easy
for a bit to give my body a chance to recover..
" You know nobody can run 50km every day.. After a year it kinda catches
up with you...! "

I thought I had heard a mouse in the room this morning at around 3 a.m.
but then I realized it was the Danish Duracell bunny rustling plastic bags
looking for his breakfast of chocolate.

When he does that he doesn't need to eat anything before he sets out.
This morning he pulled a pair of red tracksuit bottoms out of his global
wardrobe. " I hope I don't get run over as the Irish may think I am one of
the Swiss team that knocked you out of the world cup "
" Boo Hoo Hoo! Off you go Real Running man"
Once again I managed to get some good running in with him. We will have
running company tomorrow but for today I was able to drive ahead and run
back to accompany him for about 2 km each time.
Once again Jesper was looking even stronger. He pounded through the day
past Roscrea Heritage Centre and Ballaghmore Castle. He frightened the
life out of me telling me stories of a wild bear going through his
campsite in Siberia. About the Russian support driver who threatened to
abandon them 6 months from civillation as we know it. They would spend
hours talking him into staying for just a while longer. But one of
Jesper's other running companion at the time ( there was also a very tough
Japanese woman who was only interested in becoming the first person to run
across Asia) - another Russian put all his power in sorting things
out.During this time the teams driver drove behind carrying their supplies
as the roads were too bad for them to carry it themselves. After 7 and a
half months crewing for them he finally guided them to their destination.
He had crewed for them across 9 time zones! For about 4 months of their
Russian experience they had a police escort.

Jesper sometimes runs with his head down and his right hand held up. At
first when I saw this I thought there was something wrong with his arm but
then realized he passes the time away texting friends and helpers around
the world as he runs! He likes to run without any audio device as he can
enjoy nature to its fullest.

At the entrance to Portlaoise we were greeted by local athlete, Anne
Keenan Buckley. Anne has won many national and international
championships, represeented Ireland in the Seoul Olympics and holds a 5km
world masters record of 15.31 and was just 3 seconds from a 10km world
masters record.
Jesper ran through the busy town with 2 local runners From Anne's club
North Laois Athletic Club as far as the village of New Inn. One of these
runners, Martin Mc Donald is a fierce master competitor himself usually
medalling - was our host tonight.
We stayed on their dairy farm with his wife Margaret and 4 children who
couldn't do enough and even brought us over to Martin's brother's house so
as Jesper could catch up on his e- mails.
Today Jesper ran 59km.
