Today I was invited to a picnic with the Danish club at the Chicago area.
There was time to a little bit of sightseeing as well and I got a drive-by
impression of the huge and tall skyline of this approx. 8million city. It
is probably the largest city I have seen since L.A. and San Francisco
4000km back. For the most of the time I run through rural areas - because
the world mainly consists of that and not big cities, despite the
impression you get from TV... ;-) And this also means that my mind after
this long becomes much more used to the small-city life than the
metropolis-rush that I myself was used to back in Copenhagen where I lived
the last 10 years of my life !
Still Chicago didn?t seem too bad: there was plenty of green area, parks
and a long open waterfront and as far as I understood it had been an
important point throughout the city?s development to preserve the parks
despite the incentive to use the expensive mid-city areas for office and
apartment space.
But it definitely makes sense to me to choose to run around Chicago and
not through it. The traffic between the green oasis is some of the most
dense I have seen, perhaps with the exception of Japan (which wasn?t
exactly an easy task running through by the way...) and finding the way
between the spaghetti-web of Interstates, highways and avenues would have
been more of a test of my road finding skills than I would have liked with
24 000km sitting heavy in the body !
The picnic itself was very Danish: relaxed, good food under the shade of
tall green trees. Games and sport after the eating... If I hadn?t been on
the road 1,7years I could have thought I was still back home having a
picnic with my friends - perhaps in Falledparken in Copenhagen. Though
even that is a smaller place than Chicago.
