Scandinavian America!

- Looking at the map many of the names of the small villages and towns in
Minnesota has a distinct Scandinavian sound to them: "Oslo", "Viking",
"Halstad" etc..

And for good reason. Many of the people who live in the generous farmlands
up here trace their family roots to Norway, Sweden, Island or Denmark, two
or three generations back. Especially the Norwegians are in big numbers
and
many takes courses in Norwegian to be able to keep contact with the
language
of the parents or grandparents.

Very friendly people too, as has been the case with all I have met here in
Minnesota. They take their good time to inquire about my run, always with
positive comments! As I finished here in Climax, I went to the gas station
to buy some soft drink and food and after a talk about today?s stage the
employees insisted in beginning to call up the citizens in Climax to find
a
place for me to stay for the night :-)

I was offered several places and choose to stay with a widow named Anna
who
as it happened just yesterday had tried to find a Swedish translator for a
book her neighbour had bought. She had ordered a book from Sweden, but now
realised that she couldn?t read the language, so I had an interesting
afternoon translating a historic/archaeological book from Swedish to
American English! During that there naturally was many opportunities to
compare Scandinavian and American history and traditions and thus this
offered another chance to get a close look at the life and values of the
area I am running through :-)
