But other things come to mind as we leave the region of "The Autonomous
Jewish Republic of Russia".
We have run through it at perhaps the most fortunate time of year; the
tempered autumn, rich on bright colours and harvest; plenty of fish in the
small rivers.
But even when trying to compensate for that, it is difficult not to think
the naive thought:
While the Middle East has been scene for a generations long bitter
conflict over the ground for a Jewish state
- out here in the gentle mountain valleys lies a "Jewish Republic",
peaceful and perhaps prosperous; thinly populated; that is waiting for a
people to discover and develop it into what it could be.
