Goto: 12004-04-09 12004-04-11 1Russia

2004-04-10:
Distance today: 70.0 km (Accumulated: 4651.0 km)
Country: Russia

Route Report: Nab. Chelny - Menzelinsk.

70km., 6:13h. (Kazuka +13min., Alexander +34min.).

What was expected to be a fairly easy 55km. day turned out to be a 70 km.
day with challenges.

With a cold beginning in wind, rain, 3C and hills, you can probably figure
out our state of mind when we found out about our km. mistake 3 hours into
the stage.

Kazuka and I first tought it was a joke when Alexander and the police
escort - again excellent service!!:-) - told us that we had 40 and not
25km. to the finish.

Kazuka responded by setting a serious pace of about 5:30 to 5:45 min/km.
the next 20 km..
She was determined to get to supper in time!

On these last 40km. we also had compagny of the youth athletic team of the
Menzelinsk region.
They ran in a relay system where 2 - 4 runners accompagnied us and was
changed every 10km..

I learned that one of them was Tartastan champion on 3 and 5km., and
myself having competed in youth championships since 14 years old, I had to
make a little game of pace!

For 10km. we had a friendly and enjoyable "match" (3:51 to 3:56min/km.)
but I probably have to realize that the days of speed are over - at least
while the World Run km. is piling up in the legs:-)
