World Run I / ReportsGoto: 2005-03-03 2005-03-05 USA 2005-03-04: 8Distance today: 35.0 km (Accumulated: 18608.0 km) Country: USA 2005.03.04 - 35km, 3:43:16h. (+/- 2 min.). Excl. food, water, road-finding, toilet etc. stops. Total 18.567km. Start: 10:30am. Finish: 15:07pm. Time GMT - 8 hours +16c, heavy rain and light wind at start. 18c, overcast and medium wind at finish. Today?s stage was planned as a 65km run, but with heavy rain since yesterday evening I let the comfort get the upper hand and settled for a stage short enough to allow me to dry my equipment before putting up the tent. Using the tent was important as I have stayed in hotel/motels on all but 2 days since L.A., which is not exactly good for the budget.. But running along Highway 1 does not provide many opportunities for camping. Although being a beautiful part of the run, almost all areas (!) are fenced in and the roadside "decorated" with signs of the type: "No Trespassing", "Private Property", "Stay Out !", "No Camping", "No Access, Don?t Ask !" etc. Coming from Scandinavia that mentality is a bit unusual and has a stunning contrast of the openness described by last century writers like John Steinbeck in his portraits of the relaxed ambience of Monterey and Cannery row :-) Not to mention the past of the Western America as home of the vast free spaces. It has certainly come a long way since then. Well; as you can see from the most of my small reports there is on the other side also much friendship to be found here !! And luckily I found a "camping site": Costanoa, who kindly offered ground to set the tent and even made an interview about world run :-) - Later though, I found out that the charge for using the tent ground was 40$ (1pers., 1 night), excl. tax. Now it is time to think what to do about the balance of the budget.. |
